Holocaust Remembrance Day

The stumbling stones

The German artist Demnig launched the project Stumbling Stones with the aim to commemorate victims of the Nazi persecution. In the framework of this project, more than 90,000 commemorative blocks have been placed on the ground in front of places where victims lived or worked across 26 countries in Europe.

In 2018, a stumbling block has been placed on Bocconi campus too. The block is dedicated to the architect Giuseppe Pagano, who designed the Sarfatti 25 building and played a significant role in the history of the University. Pagano was declared a political opponent and deported to Mauthausen in 1944. He died in the subcamp of Melk in 1945, just few days before the camp was liberated by the Allies.

The block has been installed in front of Sarfatti 25, at the presence of Liliana Segre, Italian senator for life and Holocaust survivor.
